The students began by learning the definition of “food waste”, which includes expired food, raw scraps and cooked leftovers. They were
startled to realise how much food waste is generated on a daily basis. Through scenario-based sorting games and interactive sharing,
they discovered that food waste does not simply belong to the trash; in fact, numerous creative solutions exist. For example, unopened
food nearing its expiry date can be donated to food banks or social welfare organizations to support those in need. In daily life, roadside
recycling stations, mobile recycling trucks, and smart recycling bins are also available. Moreover, the O·PARK can transform food waste
into compost or electricity, turning it into valuable new resources.
Beyond learning about classification and recycling, students also explored the concept of “upcycling” by drawing creative inspiration from
food waste. They created vibrant stamp paintings used the cross-sections of vegetables like, bell peppers, celery, and okra, while coffee
grounds were applied to create unique patterns, further decorated with expired macaroni. The students were fascinated to discover the distinctive
geometric shapes hidden within vegetables, seamlessly incorporating them into their artwork. These creations were not only visually appealing
but also carried the important message of “waste reduction at the source.”
Through this hands-on workshop, the kindergarten Seahorse Rangers gained a fundamental understanding of the classification and
handling of food waste. They learned that mindful consumption and resourcefulness can significantly reduce waste and even create
new value. During the creative process, the children demonstrated boundless imagination and a strong sense of environmental responsibility,
while fostering a deeper, lifelong appreciation for protecting nature.
