"Low Carbon, PLS!" Day

“Low Carbon, PLS!” Day organised by the Hong Kong Ocean Park Conservation Alliance concluded successfully on February 29, 2024, with the participation of the "Ocean Park Conservation Alliance Member Schools." The objective of this event was to promote the concept of low carbon diet, including the consumption of package free item, locally source and seasonal ingredients. By implementing low carbon diet activities in schools, the aim was to encourage students to develop habits of low carbon diet and integrate it into their daily lives.

 

The "Most-liked Activity" Award of "Low Carbon, PLS!" Day

The Ocean Park Conservation Alliance encouraged member schools to submit a photo that best represented the theme of "Low Carbon, PLS!" Day for voting. This allowed schools to share their achievements in practicing low carbon diet and inspire students to incorporate it into their lives. The submitted photos were uploaded to the "Mission R" Facebook page for public voting on January 28, 2024, and ended on February 29, 2024. Over 60 member schools submitted photos for the theme activity, and a total of 9 schools were awarded the "Most-liked Activity” Award." The following are the activities of the awarded schools:

 

Kindergarten Level:

 

Tsui Lam Estate Baptist Kindergarten/Nursery

To sustain the habit of low carbon diet, the school selected locally source and seasonal package free ingredients in preparing lunch for full-day classes. The school also reuses plastic bags to fulfill the three principles of low carbon diet. Additionally, the school uses recycle containers to prepare snacks for students in developing a low carbon diet habit from a young age.

Fun Creative Kindergarten

Students were introduced to the basic knowledge of low carbon diet through school picnics. Furthermore, the school has organised a “Home-School-Community Low Carbon Campaign” for students to learn the skills of selecting low carbon ingredients at local market and distribute promotional materials on low carbon diet in the community. The campaign not only provides an opportunity for students to practice low carbon diet but also a chance to promote low carbon to the public, achieving dual benefits.

 

 

 

Primary Level:

 

Q.E.S. Old Students' Association Branch Primary School

Students has set up a “Shop Naked” Store within the school premises and invited the entire school community including teachers, parents to participate in the event. Hydroponic vegetables were among the most popular item through the selling of low carbon ingredients.  The hydroponic vegetables produced at school perfectly aligned with the three low carbon diet concepts in which students actively contributed to the environmental protection by promoting low carbon diet and environmental awareness.



Secondary Level:

 

Newman Catholic College

The school organised a “fruit day” campaign to support the “Low Carbon, PLS!” event in which they integrated the concepts of consuming package free and seasonal food into campus life by distributing fresh seasonal fruits to all teachers and students. This helped students understand the ways of living a low carbon lifestyle and the students will lead by example and dedicate themselves in promoting low carbon diet.

Buddhist Tai Hung College

To promote campus care, environmental protection and in response to Ocean Park Conservation Alliance Campaign, the school has established “the most environmentally aware class” award scheme based on four categories including class cleanliness, energy conservation, waste sorting and resource utilization. The award scheme was also embedded in the school trip to encourage students to choose local and seasonal package free ingredients, as well as reducing disposable item by bringing their own tableware. This aim to cultivate students practice of low carbon diet in their daily lives.
